The geese are on the move, sometimes during the day you may see skeins of ‘V’ shaped birds flying high overhead and if you listen closely it also may be possible to hear them. They are noisy birds and constantly chatter to each other. Dare I say that they are just like school children! At night there are even larger numbers flying past, usually very high making use of the speedy winds at that altitude [height].
There are many different types or species of geese flying by, nearly all heading south where the weather will be less cold and there are still fields of grass to feed on. In Durness we will have our lovely small black and white Greenland barnacle geese which, which I have mentioned before and there are larger ones like Greylag and Pinkfeet. Difficult to tell apart from a distance but the calls they make are different and with practice you can tell which is which.
But the largest is the Canada goose, an immigrant to this country which is spreading up from England but originally came from – which country? Can you guess?
